Love Kate Thompsons books, couldn t put this one down but it is the same with all Kates books, they are so well written and so much research goes into them Can t wait for the next book to see what happens to them all For anyone who hasn t read any of Kates books I would highly recommend them as I am sure they won t be disappointed. Once again, Kate Thompson has written another wonderful book that takes in the East End of London The Yardley factory and the ladies that work there and not to forget Walter are brilliant characters Also, Nell Gunn is a matriarch not to be crossed, This book did bring a tear to my eye This is a brilliant five star read and recommended as all Kate Thompson s books Can t wait for The Secrets of the Lavender Girls. I thought I d read enough , of WW2 Britain, but this remarkable story, is very different , set amongst the East end of London, this how real women, lived, loved and came though ,all its many terrors , highly recommend you read it I thought this was a marvellous book and can highly recommend it The story starts on 4th September 1939 in the area known as The Shoot, in Stratford, East London It tells the story of its inhabitants, Nell, Lily and Renee alongside other characters It describes life at the Yardley Factory and the people who work there They are known as The Lavender Girls Esther Orwell is a new girl, who had escaped Nazi Germany with her mother, her father, a Jew, had been detained by this horrific regime The author tells a fascinating story and describes so well the dreadful conditions that had to be endured at this time in our history I feel the author must have done an enormous amount of research and indeed did interview some of the people who had worked at the Yardley Factory at this time, providing morale boosting lipsticks etc All in all a fantastic book by Kate Thompson and I m looking forward to the sequel. This is a story of The East End of London at its rawest moment and yet, its most glorious as the gutsy women, none so than Nell and her daughters, Renee and Lily take on the world not to mention, bullying, drunken men and Hitler himself.Kate s setting of the Yardley factory is vividly brought to life To find out how, don t stop reading when the story concludes but read on to hear of Kate s devotion to documenting the stories of those who lived these times, you will find it as emotional as the sometimes heart wrenching secrets that are played out in The Homefront Girls. But not only will you Iive the story of East End women but also of a special boy and two courageous, mother and daughter, Jewish refugees.A brilliant novel, a book I highly recommend from a wonderful author.
